How to Choose the Right Face Wash for Your Skin Type

A face wash is on your skin for less than a minute, yet it shapes how everything after it behaves. Choose one that is too harsh and your skin feels tight, makes more oil and reacts more easily. Choose one that is too gentle for your skin and you may feel you never get properly clean.

In Bangladesh, where sweat, dust and sunscreen build up through the day, it is tempting to reach for the strongest cleanser you can find. That squeaky-clean feeling, though, usually means the skin’s protective barrier has been stripped. Here is a calmer way to choose.

Start with your skin type

Wash your face with a mild cleanser, pat it dry and leave it bare for an hour. Then look in the mirror.

  • Oily: shine across the forehead, nose, chin and often the cheeks.
  • Dry: skin feels tight and may look dull or flaky.
  • Combination: an oily T-zone with normal or dry cheeks.
  • Sensitive: stinging, itching or redness after many products.
  • Acne-prone: frequent clogged pores, blackheads or breakouts.

Oily and combination skin

Gel and foaming cleansers lift excess oil without scrubbing. Niacinamide and zinc are helpful ingredients for oil control. You do not need to wash more than twice a day; over-washing tends to make oiliness worse.

Acne-prone skin

Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid, dissolves oil inside the pore and helps with blackheads and breakouts. If your skin is new to it, start with once a day and watch for dryness.

Dry and sensitive skin

Cream, lotion and non-foaming cleansers clean gently and leave moisture behind. Ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid on the label are good signs. Centella asiatica can help calm redness. Fragrance-free is usually kinder.

How to wash your face well

  1. Use lukewarm water. Hot water strips oil and leaves skin dry.
  2. Massage a small amount of cleanser for 30 to 60 seconds, so the ingredients have time to work.
  3. Rinse thoroughly, including the hairline and jaw.
  4. Pat dry with a clean towel and apply moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp.

Do you need to double cleanse?

If you wear sunscreen or makeup every day, a two-step cleanse at night helps. Start with micellar water or a cleansing gel to dissolve sunscreen, then follow with your usual face wash. In the morning, one gentle cleanse is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change my face wash between seasons?

Many people move to a gentler, more hydrating cleanser in winter, when the air is drier, and back to a gel in summer.

Is soap fine for the face?

Most bar soaps are more alkaline than facial skin and can leave it dry and tight. A pH-balanced face wash is usually kinder.
