Winter Skincare Routine for Dry Skin in Bangladesh
By late October, most people in Bangladesh notice the same thing. Skin that felt oily all summer starts to feel tight after a wash, lips crack, and the shins and hands turn dull and flaky. Winter in Bangladesh is not freezing, but the air turns dry from November to February, and that dryness pulls water out of the skin fast.
The fix is not a shelf full of products. It is a few small changes to the routine you already have, started before the worst of the cold arrives.
Quick answer: in winter, switch to a gentle non-foaming cleanser, apply a ceramide moisturiser on damp skin twice a day, keep wearing sunscreen, and treat lips, hands and feet separately at night.
Why skin gets dry in winter
The outer layer of your skin, called the skin barrier, is held together by lipids such as ceramides. In humid months the air helps keep that layer hydrated. When humidity drops, water escapes through the barrier more easily. Long hot showers, harsh soaps and fans or heaters make it worse.
Once the barrier is weak, skin feels tight, looks dull and can sting when you apply products. Some people also get more breakouts, because dehydrated skin can produce extra oil. That is why oily skin needs moisturiser in winter too.
A simple winter routine
Morning
- Cleanse gently, or just rinse. If your skin is dry, a splash of lukewarm water is enough in the morning. If it is oily, use a mild cleanser such as a hydrating, non-foaming formula.
- Moisturise on damp skin. Pat your face, leave it slightly wet, then apply moisturiser. This seals water in.
- Sunscreen. UV rays do not stop in winter, and winter sun in Bangladesh is still strong around midday. A moisturising sunscreen can replace one layer on very busy mornings.
Night
- Cleanse to remove sunscreen, dust and pollution.
- Treat if needed. If you use a serum for dark spots or acne, apply it now, but use it on alternate nights if your skin feels irritated.
- Moisturise more richly. A thicker cream at night does most of the repair work.
- Lips, hands and feet. A layer of petroleum jelly or a rich cream on lips, cuticles and heels before bed makes a visible difference within a week.

Which moisturiser should you choose?
Look at the ingredient list rather than the brand. In winter, the most useful ingredients are:
- Ceramides, which rebuild the skin barrier.
- Glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which pull water into the skin.
- Petrolatum, shea butter or mineral oil, which form a protective layer so water does not escape.

| Skin type | What to look for | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Very dry or flaky | Thick cream with ceramides or petrolatum | CeraVe Moisturising Cream, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, NIVEA Creme |
| Normal or combination | Light cream or lotion | CeraVe Moisturising Cream 50ml, Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream |
| Oily or acne-prone | Gel-cream, non-comedogenic | Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser, Skintific TXA Niacinamide Moisture Gel |
| Body | Lotion with oat, aloe or ceramides | Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion, NIVEA Repair & Care Body Lotion |
Winter mistakes to avoid
- Very hot showers. They feel good on a cold morning but strip natural oils. Keep the water lukewarm and the shower short.
- Harsh bar soap on the face. Many soaps are alkaline and leave skin tight. A gentle cleanser is kinder.
- Skipping sunscreen because it is cold. Cold does not block UV. Dark spots often get worse over winter for this reason.
- Licking dry lips. Saliva evaporates and leaves lips drier than before.
- Scrubbing flaky skin hard. Gentle exfoliation once a week is enough. Daily scrubbing damages the barrier further.
- Buying cheap copies. Moisturisers like CeraVe and Cetaphil are widely faked in Bangladesh. Read our guide on how to spot fake skincare before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Does oily skin need moisturiser in winter?
Yes. Dry air dehydrates oily skin too, and dehydrated skin can produce more oil and more breakouts. Choose a light, non-comedogenic gel-cream.
Should I wear sunscreen in winter in Bangladesh?
Yes. UVA rays are present all year and pass through clouds and glass. Wear SPF 30 or higher every morning, even in December and January.
Is petroleum jelly good for the face?
It does not clog pores for most people and is excellent for very dry patches, lips and around the nose during a cold. If you are acne-prone, use it only on dry areas.
When should I see a doctor?
If skin cracks, bleeds, itches badly or does not improve after two weeks of regular moisturising, see a dermatologist. Conditions such as eczema often flare in winter and need proper treatment.
